Information design that changes the way that we think and behave

Waves of Knowing was a challenge commissioned by Cardiff Met’s Graphic Communication Team to create a series of information design boards alongside behaviour change and disruptive design outcomes. Choosing a problem (improper disposal of single-use plastic face masks) and creating a solution for social change (a statement on the problem).

Using a range of sources, I compiled research on the use of single-use plastic face masks both during and since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Waves of Knowing - enacting changes in behaviour

The mass amount of plastic waste produced from unused and improperly disposed single-use masks has had a hard impact on the environment and marine life. I used this compiled research to design information boards that included key statistics as well as, a user journey for a proposed solution. A sterile, mobile disposal unit for carers to take their single-use masks with them in order to recycle them at available facilities.

My ultimate goal for this project was to inform the public, especially those that are legally required to use single-use masks, on the impact that improper disposal and use of general waste services have on the aquatic environment.

The final outcome was a conceptual design for a sculpture made of single-use masks that would have otherwise been incinerated by the government. To be placed in hospital green spaces along with an information plaque outlining the problem.
